India has been celebrated for its art, literature and writing since ancient times.Indians take pride in the diversity of their languages. A wide variety of authors can be listed when it comes to Indian literature.
Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May 1861.He was a Bengali poet,writer,music, composer and painted from the Indian subcontinent .He reshaped bengali literature and music .In 1913,he received nobel prize in literature.He compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems : India’s Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Shonar Bangla.Even though Tagore received his education in law he took great interest in Shakespeare’s and his literature.His first poem ‘Mansai’ was published in 1890.His most significant works include ‘Gitanjali’ which was a collection of poems and ‘Galpaguchchha’ which are eight short stories .
2. R.K Narayan
Rasipuram krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami was born on 10th October 1906.He was commonly known as Rk Narayan was an Indian writer know for his work set in the south indian town of Malgudi.Rk Narayan received many awards and rewards including AC Benson Medal from royal society of literature,the Padma vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. His book was ‘The dark room’.
3. Vikram Seth
Vikram Seth was born on 20th June,1952 in Calcutta.He was an Indian novelist and poet. He is best known for his epic novel ‘A Suitable boy’.He has received several awards such as Padma Shri,Sahitya academy award.
4. Amrita Pritam
Amrita Pritam was born on 31th August, 1919.she was an Indian novelist and poet who wrote in punjabi and hindi. She was considered the first prominent female punjabi novelist, poet and leading 20th century poet of Punjabi language. She was a courageous woman who did not fear writing controversial text during the pre-partition era.
5. Khushwant Sing
Khushwant Singh was born on 2nd February,2015. He was an Indian author, lawyer, journalist and politician. His experience in 1947 partition of India inspired him to write Train to Pakistan in 1956 which became his well known novel. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
6. Ruskin Bond
Ruskin Bond was born on 19th,May in Punjab.British Indian and obtained his education in Shimla and after completion of high school he moved to the U.K to enhance his writing career. He started his career as a freelance writer and eventually got jobs as editor in various magazines. In 1980 his novel was published which became widely admired amongst readers. His best known work is ‘The blue umbrella’, a heartwarming story read worldwide.
7. Jhumpa Lahiri
Jhumpa Laihiri was born on 11th July,1961.She is well known for her novels, essays and short stories. Her famous work was ‘The interpreter of Maladies’. After her success she wrote many other novels which are famous throughout the Indian continent and the world. Some of the most famous ones being; The namesake, Unaccustomed Earth and The lowland.
8 .Chetan Bhagat
Chetan Bhagat was born on 22nd April,1974. He is an Indian author and columnist.He was included in Times magazine’s list of world’s 100 most influential people in 2010.Cited by The New York Times in 2008 as the biggest selling English language novelist in India’s history. Some of his famous work includes Five Point Someone, 2 States, Half Girlfriend and One Indian Girl.
9. Arundhati Roy
Arundhati Roy was born on 24 November ,1961.She is an Indian author best known for her novel The God of Small Things which won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997.She is also a political activist involved in human rights and environmental causes.
10.Sarat Chandra chattopadhyay
Sarat Chandra was born on 15th September 1876. He was a Bengali writer. He made contributions to magazines from time to time. Since he was a feminist he seemed it to write about the bigotry and patriarchal society. His most popular works are ‘Devdas’ which was published in 1917), ‘Parineeta’ (1914), Biraj Bau (1914), and Palli Samaj (1916).
