Spike in Covid-19 infections in Karnataka, Bengaluru runs out of space to cremate the dead bodies.

Earlier on 28th April, Karnataka government had ordered to lockdown the city for two weeks in order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Despite of curfew over a week there is a spike in Covid-19 cases instead of decreasing. Now the situation is out of hand as the city’s active cases have been increasing day by day. The curfew imposed currently has not given the expected positive result. Therefore to get things under control the government is planning to impose restrictions to lockdown the state for two weeks after May 12th. The state government shall give its decision in just two days, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa mentioned.

Karnataka is facing an oxygen crisis due to an uncertain increase in the number of Covid cases everyday. Because of lack of oxygen supply, ventilators and hospital beds many lost their lives. Breaching the mark of five lakh active cases in the state, on 6th May Karnataka has reported 49,058  new Covid infections and according to the health department the toll stood at 17,212 with 328 deaths. The hike in Corona positive cases has overwhelmed hospitals, morgues and crematoriums.

As per the sources, currently Bangalore Urban alone has reported more than 8,87,000 cases and over 7,145 deaths. The number of deaths in the state had been keeping the burial grounds and crematoriums very engaged that Bengaluru is running out of space to cremate the dead bodies. Recently a crematorium which takes nearly 20 bodies for cremation had refused to take in further bodies by placing a board mentioning “no more bodies will be taken up for cremation”.

There are 13 electronic crematoriums in Bangalore and had been constantly on duty as dead bodies piled up. Even the government in order to relieve the pressure on crematoriums had allotted 230 acres of land to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) around Bangalore. Along with this the government had decided to allow cremations in farms and plots owned by families.

This horrific situation has broken the hopes of people and left them with no other choice but to weep over the condition of their loved ones as now it has become very difficult to perform the last rituals of a dead person.
